Developed as a functional prototype for a lecturer's research project, "Semena" is an educational mobile game. Its purpose is to provide foundational education on menarche (first menstruation) and puberty to adolescents through an interactive and engaging 'Snakes & Ladders' format.
Technical Challenge & Implementation
The primary challenge was to translate the classic rules of 'Snakes & Ladders' into a digital format while seamlessly integrating educational quiz elements. The technical implementation included:
- Game Logic Development: Designing a turn-based game system, random dice roll logic, and automated player movement, including the rules for ladders (advancing) and snakes (moving back).
- Interactive Quiz System: Managing a database of 30 puberty-related questions and the logic to validate user answers. Correct answers allow the player to advance, while incorrect ones do not.
- Player State Management: Tracking and saving each player's position on the board and the overall game state until one player reaches the finish line.
A Note on Design
As this was a prototype developed for a research project, the primary focus was on functional gameplay and the effective delivery of educational content. Therefore, visual polish was a secondary priority.
Outcome
The result was a fully functional educational game prototype, successfully demonstrating that gamification can be an effective teaching tool for sensitive yet important topics like reproductive health.
